Can computers and robots think? Do they have what it takes to develop awareness? When the specialists from the Data Lab at Volkswagen Group IT talk about their work, they frequently hear these questions. That’s because an international team is working here in the Data Lab on teaching programmes to learn independently. Their development work could provide better support for their colleagues in factory and office environments in future in many business processes. One thing is important to the Volkswagen specialists: if you are looking for machines that can think, you are more likely to find them in Hollywood than at the Data Lab. What the specialists focus on is developing algorithms that can learn independently to identify and predict specific patterns and regularities to allow the best possible decisions to be made. The key to this is what is known as machine learning or, in simple terms, the ability of a program to link data, analyse relationships and make predictions. The team intends to go much further however. Its sights are set on deep neural networks.
