Research & Development

We combine science and fiction

Helping to shape the future is an exciting and inspiring task.

We don’t wait to see what the future holds. We develop it ourselves. With imagination, creativity, expertise – and success. As a think tank and innovation hub we continue to advance research and development of alternative drive concepts, forward-looking assist systems and digital vehicle networking at Volkswagen

Our cars are becoming increasingly safer, more efficient and smarter. They communicate with the driver, connect with their environment, drive purely electrically and soon automatically too. They are therefore more than just a means of transport, rather also living spaces. They are designed and developed by people with a fresh approach to mobility. Helping to actively shape the mobility of the future is an extremely exciting task, since it involves turning science fiction into reality. And over a total area of 1.2 square kilometres in one of the largest automobile innovation centres in the world.

Working in Group research

The future of the automobile is characterised especially by trends and societal conditions. Our task is to anticipate and understand the future needs of our customers and to translate these into innovative technologies. Our aim is to ensure that we can also meet our customers’ future requirements for individual and affordable mobility by means of sustainable technologies. We work closely with our partners to achieve these objectives.

Group research is based in Wolfsburg and is responsible for all Group brands. Its international trend and technology scouting is conducted by research facilities – in markets such as the US, Japan and China among others – for the purpose of strategic alignment.

Working in development

In development we work on the conception, design, construction and testing of future Volkswagen models. We use modern technologies and facilities in this respect, such as a variety of different test beds, climatic wind tunnels, visualisation centres and two proving grounds. A core aspect of our work is the E-Campus, where we bundle all of our expertise in the area of electrical systems and electronics under one roof.

Our exciting and forward-looking topics are developed in collegial teams. Ongoing sharing of information and experiences with one another and with the other corporate divisions is important to us so that we can shape the future of mobility together.
